As reported by the New York Post, congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is battling with retailer Total Wine & More, who plan to open a location in College Point, Queens. The store, which has several locations around the country, has been referred to as a “Wal-Mart of Liquor” by opponents, the Post says.
Cortez Claims that Total Wine’s low prices will harm small businesses in the area, and is imploring New York state Liquor Authority Chairman Vincent Bradley to withhold a license from the company.
The Post was made privy to a letter that Ocasio-Cortez sent Bradley saying that “My district enjoys many of the benefits of a vibrant small business economy: job creation for and by community members, socio-economic mobility for immigrants and new Americans, and long-lasting relationships between proprietors and their customers.”
Total Wine unsuccessfully attempted to open stores in Westchester and Stony Brook a few years ago, the Post says, but their attempts were shut down by the New York State Retailers alliance after major pushback from liquor store owners in the area. There is one store in Long Island.
